Ever wondered what all those movie stars do to maintain such a striking complexion? In the last few years, more and more of the beauty industry has begun to swear on using facial oils as their go-to skincare product. However, a majority of the common crowd is still sceptical about its effectiveness. Today, we break down the science behind the miracle everyone claims them to be.

At birth, our skin is enriched with essential fatty acids which help in maintaining a lipid barrier against all the external impurities, dirt, bacteria as well as provide moisture, thus preventing dehydration. But as we grow older, the amount of oil produced by our skin begins to diminish leading to problems like wrinkles, acne, etc. The use of natural facial oils therefore, help replenish the oil stores of the skin, maintaining its youthful glow.

What exactly are facial oils?  Facial oils are therapeutic oils extracted from different plants and herbs. The name facial oil, is however, not really appropriate as they can be used on any part of the body and be just as effective.

  • Cleansing:

Confused about how to use facial oils? We can help:

You heard it right. Oils are being used increasingly as cleansers and makeup removers as they are uber effective in extracting dirt and product from the pores. Need more incentive? Using oil to cleanse your eye-makeup in turn helps strengthen your eyelashes as well. Yay!

  • Moisturizing:

Facial oils are absorbed into the top layer of the skin, known as the epidermis from where they travel down to the dermis and reinforce the natural lipid barrier which protects your skin from dehydration by locking in moisture. Hello, baby-soft skin!

  • Preventing wrinkles:

As you age, skin gradually begins to lose moisture due to deterioration of the lipid barrier which makes your skin prone to wrinkles. Using facial oils rehydrates your skin, maintaining its elasticity and delaying progression of wrinkles.

  • Preventing acne:

Since oil dissolves oil, applying oil externally onto your skin helps to disintegrate the hardened oil deposits lodged inside your pores, drastically reducing the occurrence of acne.

  • Anti-aging:

Facial oils are primarily composed of antioxidants and essential fatty acids.
Antioxidants help fight free radicals which can damage the epidermal cells as well as DNA whereas, fatty acids help reduce inflammation. Together, they are super effective in slowing down the entire aging process so that you get to live your youth beyond your twenties as well!

A question that generally pops up into everyone’s minds is, what exactly is the difference between creams and facial oils?

Well, for starters, facial oils are natural products that do not contain any kind of chemicals or preservatives.

The creams that you buy at drugstores or high-end boutiques contain mainly wax, water and chemical preservatives, with a small fraction of oil added. These create a layer on top of the epidermis, which helps lock in the moisture, but prevent the added oil from penetrating deep into the dermis and actually benefitting your skin.

Oils, on the other hand, can enter into the dermis and act onto the dermal cells, thus delivering on its promises.

So there, that is the power of facial oils brought to you in a nutshell. Excellent for your skin, as well as easy on your wallet. Who knew that Hollywood glow was so affordable?
